Stephen has been working with dying and their loved ones, consulting the healthcare professionals and carers for over 20 years. During this seminar, Stephen shares with us his experience and knowledge of the path of wise dying, without which it is impossible to live a good and profound life, and vice versa. We will learn why wise dying is not only our spiritual but also moral duty.
Stephen considers dying as a moment of truth; the cradle and a grave of all our convictions about what justice or mercy are, what is the meaning of life, what love is. While being with the dying and their loved ones, Stephen has seen how we treat our dying friends and relatives over and over again. Whether that be through avoiding the death topic, trying to buy "more time" for us, or simply demanding they act like they are living instead of dying. Stephen does not offer simple answers, or a clearly-served "aha!" moments. Sometimes it may not be easy to remain in the rawness of truths revealed through his radical kindness. One of the truths is about the role of death and dying in a society that is dependent on the pain management and pills. Dying, in Stephen's view, is not something that happens to us but rather something that we do. Our deaths should serve as examples for future generations of how to accept death as part of the natural course of life, rather than some isolated event to be hidden behind closed doors and away from the hearts and minds of the living. During this seminar we will explore with Stephen where we as a culture went wrong, and how we can go about setting it right. The themes among others will be: ~ The ordeal of a managed death ~ Stealing meaning from dying ~ What happens when we don't let dying ~ The Iatrogenic nightmare of palliative care ~ Euthanasia and suicide ~ Hopes around dying ~ What dying asks from us ~ Quality of life ~ Children and dying and more...
