Stephen Jenkinson (1954) is an award-winning Canadian author who studied theology at Harvard University and Social Work at the University of Toronto.
Seven years he traveled North America in a caravan with Brother Blue (master narrator and street performer) and his wife, Ruth Edmons Hill. They performed in bars, prisons, on the street. The central themes of their improvised street narrative were identity, race, equality, love. During these years, Stephen discovered and developed his extraordinary gift of insight and eloquent speech. Later Stephen has worked as a director of the Children’s grief and palliative care at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto, and as an assistant professor at the University of Toronto’s School of Family and Community Medicine. Stephen has now been a consultant for palliative and hospice teams in Canada for more than 25 years. He accompanies the dying and their families, those who grieve. He travels, teaches, and helps people to regain the real meaning of wise living and wise dying. Besides, Stephen is also a musician, a philosopher, a farmer, a builder of traditional canoes and a sought-after storyteller par excellence. "GRIEFWALKER" DOCUMENTARY
Stephen's reflections and insights about the struggle of modern society with life and death inspired director Tim Wilson (respected Nova Scotia filmmaker) to record the documentary "Griefwalker" – National Film Board of Canada film. It is a study of Stephen's relationship to life and his work with dying. Tim Wilson managed to capture how Stephen, through his profound sense for order of life and fearless naming of cultural clichés, helps people make difficult decisions (not only) at the end of life. It is clear from the document that Stephen has an extraordinary gift of teaching. Therefore, it is no wonder, that the documentary led to the founding of the Orphan Wisdom School. In today's difficult times, we are in great need of the wisdom that Stephen carries within. We are extremely grateful that we will be able to spend an evening and a weekend with Stephen on his short visit to Europe.
